The brand ScotiaMcLeod was created through the 1987–1988 acquisition of the investment firm McLeod Young Weir by the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank).
This historic merger was a major milestone in the deregulation of the Canadian financial services sector, often referred to as Canada's "Little Bang".
Key Details of the Merger
Regulatory Shift: In 1987, the Ontario government amended its financial regulations to lift the historic separation between commercial banking and investment brokerages, allowing major banks to own securities firms outright.
The Transaction: In December 1987, Scotiabank agreed to acquire 100% control of McLeod Young Weir for $419 million. The transaction officially closed and the firm was rebranded as ScotiaMcLeod in 1988.
◦ The Entities Involved:
McLeod Young Weir was an incredibly well-established firm founded in 1921. By the late 1980s, it had around 1,600 employees, dozens of offices across Canada, and an international footprint in cities like London, New York, Tokyo, and Zurich. It was particularly famous for dominating the Canadian bond market.
Scotiabank leveraged the acquisition to rapidly diversify into corporate underwriting, investment banking, and retail brokerage services.
Legacy: To celebrate the union, the ScotiaMcLeod Charitable Foundation was established in 1987. In 1999, Scotiabank integrated its wholesale capital markets operations under the name Scotia Capital Inc., while preserving the ScotiaMcLeod name specifically for its full-service retail wealth management division.
