Special Olympics Ontario and the North Bay Police Service (NBPS) have launched the RBC “Community Champions” Volunteer Program for the upcoming Provincial Winter Games, to be held in North Bay in 2027.
The goal is to recruit 600 volunteers to help with the games, which take place from January 28 to 31.
About 60 people visited the lower lecture hall in the police station on October 5 for the launch of the volunteer campaign. Excitement filled the air for the pending games, as athletes from across the province will convene in North Bay for a weekend of competition. The games are a qualifier for the 2028 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Hundreds of athletes will attend, as will their coaches and families, and volunteers will help ensure everything runs smoothly for visitors and sports fans attending the games.
“These games are about much more than competition,” noted NBPS Chief, Daryl Longworth. “The Special Olympics uses sport to build confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging. At their heart, these games are about inclusion, they’re about dignity, and they’re about providing opportunity.”

Special Olympics Ontario and the North Bay Police Service (NBPS) have launched the RBC “Community Champions” Volunteer Program for the upcoming Provincial Winter Games, to be held in North Bay in 2027.

The NBPS is hosting the games and has been seeking sponsors to ensure the event is a success. The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is sponsoring the volunteer program with a $20,000 contribution. The bank is also donating shirts for volunteers.
France Thibeault, RBC Regional Vice President, stated in a release, “At RBC, we believe sport has the power to bring people together and build stronger, more inclusive communities. The RBC Community Champions program is about celebrating the volunteers who will make the 2027 Provincial Winter Games in North Bay truly unforgettable. We’re proud to stand behind these dedicated individuals and the Special Olympics athletes who inspire us all with their courage, determination and joy."
Merv Shantz, of the NBPS, serves as the manager for the 2027 Winter Games. It’s a role he knows well, having managed the 2015 Winter Games when they were held in North Bay. “The Special Olympics worldwide is an incredible movement, and since 1996 every provincial games in Ontario have been hosted by a Police Service. We’re the only jurisdiction in the world that runs their games through a police service. It’s very unique, but the quality of work and the games that the police service puts on in Ontario is second to none, and we’re very proud of that.”
“We want to encourage these athletes,” Shantz added. “And we’re also very proud that RBC has come on board as the title sponsor for the volunteer program.”
Jennifer Tanner and Lisa O’Kane are volunteer coordinators for this year’s games. O’Kane emphasized that each volunteer shift is four hours, so if anyone can spare some time to fill a shift, they are welcome to do so. You don’t need to volunteer for the entire weekend; however, you can volunteer as much as you like.
Tanner mentioned volunteers will be incredibly important to making sure the upcoming games are successful. The amount of volunteer help needed may be daunting, but she has faith people will come forward to fill those roles. “We know North Bay rises to the challenge of volunteering. We’ve seen it in the past when the games were held here in 2015, and now we’re back to do it again.”
How can you help? There will be three RBC Community Champions information sessions located at the NBPS building at 135 Princess Street West in North Bay. The sessions occur on Tuesday, October 13 from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to noon, and on Wednesday, November 4 from 9 a.m. to noon
Those interested can learn more at these sessions and sign up to volunteer. Also, you can visit provincialgames.com to sign up as well. Note that to volunteer with the games, you must obtain a criminal record check through the NBPS. Online record checks cost around $10, but that fee will be waived if done through one of the volunteer sessions.
“Volunteering with Special Olympics is incredibly rewarding,” said Shantz. “You get to work closely with Special Olympics athletes, see the smiles on their faces, and experience firsthand the incredible impact these Games and Special Olympics have on athletes and their families. It is an opportunity to be part of something that is life-changing for those involved.”
